Our History

Way back in 1998, when the UK hosted the Eurovision and everyone wanted to be Carrie Bradshaw’s best friend, the shop began its tale under the name Altered Images just doing clothing alterations. It wasn’t until 2008 that it became the emporium of wool and haberdashery it is today. The shop name had a bit of a revamp in 2020, the year of the big “home retreat”, to become Darn Knit!

In our little treasure trove we stock a range of quality knitting wools from Cygnet, Hayfield, James C. Brett, King Cole, Rico, and Sirdar, as well as an extensive collection of knitting patterns, you’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice! All your every day haberdashery needs are taken care of with threads from Gutermann, needles, pins, scissors, bias binding, buttons and ribbons galore! We’ve also got everything you might need to look after your clothes for the long term, darning wools, darning mushrooms, fabric patches, but also we’ll quite happily mend or alter your clothes for you too, giving them a whole new lease of life.

Sian

I took over the business in 2018, after originally working here part-time for a year or so in 2012. I’ve always been a crafty person with a passion for sewing, so much so that I did a BA Honours in Fashion Design. After University I worked as a seamstress in the wedding dress industry for five years. I love everything colourful, the more brightly coloured the better! That’s why I love the shop so much! I can knit and crochet, my absolute favourite things to knit are socks!

Nicki

I’ve worked part-time at Darn Knit since 2013, you’ll mostly find me in the back busy sewing away happily (sometimes singing!). I’ve always been stylish and crafty, and I did a BA Honours in Fashion Design in Manchester. I love crochet the most, but lately I’ve been further developing my knitting skills. I love all things camo, leopard print and mustard!

Pauline

I’ve worked part-time as a knitting advisor for Darn Knit since 2011, where has the time gone?! I learnt to knit from my Grandma as a child and I haven’t stopped since! I’ll knit absolutely anything I fancy, but my favourite knits are the Little Cotton Rabbits. If I’m not knitting or sewing at home, you’ll find me looking after my prize winning garden.

Daphne

I am a Schneagle, Miniature Schnauzer cross Beagle. I come to work every day with my Mum Siân. I love nothing more than a biscuit or two, and a good tickle and hug. I like yarn just as much as my Mum does, but mostly I like to chew it, which Mum tells me off for.
